The Third Man My Life And Times Inside The Ring And Out James Beard Mark James Ric Gross 9781494773977 Books
The book is actually less an autobiography of James Beard, and more of his insights into the wrestling business and some of the great personalities of the business, especially those who made the Dallas promotion one of, if not THE, hottest promotions in the mid-80's. Mr Beard devotes entire chapters to the Von Erichs, the Freebirds, Gary Hart, Skandar Akbar, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and many others whose names will be instantly recognizable by fans from that era. Of particular interest are Chapter 13 "The Real Heroes of the Wrestling Business" where he profiles some of the guys with the unenviable job of making the stars look good, and Chapter 4 "Refereeing 101".Mr Beard is honest in his re-telling the stories, recalling both the good and bad in the people he worked with over the years. This is not a "dirt book", however - you won't find salacious tales of debauchery, nor will you find him taking shots at guys. You will find many anecdotes, some funny, some sad, some that just make you shake your head.
All in all, it's a fascinating read.

The Third Man My Life And Times Inside The Ring And Out James Beard Mark James Ric Gross 9781494773977 Books Reviews
Very interesting book from a different side of wrestling. I'm enjoying it a lot. Learning what happened in Texas in the heyday is interesting. Wonderful job Mark!!
The story was great but the ebook was overpriced and badly formatted. The table of contents didn't work. If it wasn't so well written I wouldn't have kept reading and just returned it due to the bad formatting.
Unfortunately, I live in Georgia. The book went way in depth into things I wasn't all that interested in. I think it would appeal more to folks who were more emotionally invested in wrestling in the Texas area. It's well written and conveys a sense of honesty--I'd read another book Beard wrote, but this one didn't quite light my fire.
Simply put, this book is fantastic. If you are a wrestling fan at all, this book is one you will enjoy cover-to-cover. Great behind-the-scenes stories about the business, what it was like in the locker room and in the ring. James Beard, the author, worked with so many of the greats over the years, and he shares great insights. The book has laughs also, with funny stories, and also delves into the tragic. Wrestling fans of a certain age for sure have heard of the wrestling Von Erich family - father, Fritz, and sons David, Kevin, Kerry, Mike and Chris - all of whom became pro wrestlers and whom James knew personally and worked with. Their story was one of tremendous highs, becoming wrestling legends in Texas, and tragic lows - Kevin is the lone survivor, as the other four brothers died young, three by suicide. James has a truly poignant and fascinating 40-page chapter on the Von Erich family. That story, and James' insights there, alone make the book worth purchasing. The Von Erichs main wrestling rivals were The Fabulous Freebirds, and James has another outstanding chapter devoted to them. Mix in stories about Gentleman Chris Adams, The Handsome Halfbreed Gino Hernandez, Justin Hawk Bradshaw and more...and what you have is a wrestling book not to be missed.
If you loved Texas wrestling growing up this is a great read. James Beard as head ref for so many Texas promotions saw many talents from their formative years to their final years in the ring. Its all here from Skandar Akbar, a young Steve Austin, Chris Adams, Gary Hart, the Von Erichs and many other wrestling legends who left their mark on the Lone Star States rich history of pro wrestling.
People often forget that the referee interacts and sees all the talent on the card and often has a great perspective on the journeyman and stars that make up the sport of pro wrestling.
James helped book talent for Japan as well as Texas and had insights and stories on it all. All aspiring refs & pro wrestlers should read it for the education alone of an era that is unfortunately gone. A great book to add to your collection!!
This is an outstanding book about Mr. Beard's time in WCCW and his wrestling journey. He has been there and seen it all. You may not realize who he is at first but trust me you have seen this guy more times than you realize because he was a mainstay in the ring. I am halfway through the book and I must say I am enjoying it. He's not trying to drop any pipebombs or calling people out but he is telling the story as he saw it through his time in the wrestling business. This is a great read!
Simply put, if the majority of the book would have been written strictly about the wrestlers he had insights to and if he would have been bold in talking in detail about those he knew; this could have been one of the best wrestling books ever. There are some good stories but too many comments to the effect of I won't discuss this story here because it has been told a hundred times even though not everyone may know the stories. Clearly he was trying to be respectful to those that have passed and those he worked with but it would have been more enjoyable if he shared more stories with the stars of WCCW. The book hits a lull when he starts talking more about his life as a referee (no offense to the author) but none the less, you can tell he has a great passion for wrestling and WCCW.
