It is 1744. War between England and France has been formally declared when the dashing young American Edward Mainwaring, captain of His Majesty's sailing ship "Pallas", is unexpectedly taken prisoner off the coast of Mauritius.

Mainwaring and his crew make a daring escape. Hungry for revenge, they steal a bizarre flotilla of ill-equipped ships and prepare to attack the French fleet headed by Mainwaring's old enemy, the dastardly Roche-Bourbon and his powerful ship "Achille".

The French see Roche-Bourbon as the key to their victory in the Indian Ocean and are forced to make concessions to him, one of which is custody of the beautiful Lady Caroline Grenville – whose life becomes a nightmare of violence and mistreatment in his hands.

As a tropical monsoon threatens, Mainwaring prepares for his final, deadly confrontation with Roche-Bourbon. On the outcome of this personal battle rests the fate of England in the Indian Ocean, the possession of millions of bullion stored in "Achille", and the life of Lady Grenville.

"Captain Monsoon" is the fourth and final book in Victor Suthren's series of thrilling seafaring yarns. Teeming with adventure and written with a vivid sense of history, it captures the excitements and dangers of life at the mast.

About the Author Victor Suthren is a Canadian writer and historian with a special interest in maritime history. This was the final in a four book set. The same hero and villain have another go at one another, but the final confrontation ends unexpectedly. The author seems to have an anti-war sentiment in the way that he describes the battles etc. He includes a number of atrocities that many authors in the nautical fiction genre ignore, giving it a more somber mood than many of the hip, hip, hooray heroic stories. But it is a good read, and brings a conclusion to the series.

Captain Monsoon Mainwaring Series Book 4 edition by Victor Suthren Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This series, and particularly the fourth and evidently final episode, borders on the implausible. It is so imaginative in its plotting, however, that it can be forgiven for its sometimes over-the-top sequences. It has become one of my most enthralling 18th century naval reads after a lifetime of being hooked on this venue. I can't wait to tackle his next series and hopefully many more to follow.
I have read most of the books in this series, and all of them are well-written and I enjoyed them thoroughly. The characters are well written and believable. I look forward to more of the series.
Author Suthern continues the adventures of Mainwering in this rapidly developing story. Southern is well-versed on nautical terms and ship handling. The plot is well thought out, but how many ships can Mainwering lose before they quit giving him another?
A more cunning than usual title arrived at later in the story had me quite on edge waiting to find out who actually was Captain Monsoon . When i did find out, I was greatly amused but won't " spill the beans" so as not to spoil it for other readers.
Too far fetched, does not come close to reality at all. Does not know naval tactics that were empowering that period.
The period is interesting, because it's so little covered. Napoleonic wars are amply covered, but the first half of the 18th century is unusual in fiction. A 44-gun 2-decker as a top of the line cruiser sets the tone for the period. Mainwaring has a basic problem that seems to get worse with each book, he is arguably incompetent and pulls things off by the skin of his teeth, or of other people's teeth. The French bad guy is a caricature. I don't think the main character every commands more than 12 people for any length of time, because he always loses the rest... Still it is amusing.
I liked this book. I believe it is the best of this four book series. The captain (Mainwaring) is a true leader, earning the respect of his men. Few naval officers have this leadership ability however you always knew he was the captain. He led by ability. There are a number of turns in this book. From his capture, escape, the lost of his ship, romance and over coming all hardships. In the end he wins. I wish there was more of this character and crew in later books.
This was the final in a four book set. The same hero and villain have another go at one another, but the final confrontation ends unexpectedly.
